The German GMP studio (consisting of Meinhard von Gerkan, Nikolaus Goetze and Magdalene Weiss) has created a very special project called onCube in Shanghai. The project is made an impression by its illumination as much as it’s architecture.
The office building with a total height of 90 meters consists of 20 floors and the lighting design prepared in this context includes illumination of the square forms that make up the building silhouette. While the façade architecture is divided in detail in the middle part, the two architectures face each other with an inverted projection. With the details created in the middle part, the building is gaining a “waistband” look, which is highlighted by blue light at night. In addition, the lighting system designed by the Illumine studio emphasizes the three-dimensional nature of the building with its 800 Trick luminaires (iGuzzini) mounted on the façade. The illuminations were directed to the frames of the squares that make up the grid to accentuate the façade depths. With DALI control system lighting can be controlled separately. Thus, it is possible to realize different animations in the design. The lighting design represents a good example for the illumination of today’s modern buildings, with its light color and project, as well as its control system.
